FireSMART

Prince Township FireSmart Plan
Welcome to the Prince Township FireSmart page! As part of our commitment to community safety, we have developed a comprehensive FireSmart plan to reduce the risk of wildfire in and around our township. This plan outlines key strategies to protect homes, infrastructure, and natural resources from wildfire. Below, you will find an overview of the plan, recommendations for residents, useful resources, and related legislation.

Overview of the FireSmart Plan - view the plan here
The FireSmart Plan for Prince Township aims to enhance community resilience to wildfires through proactive measures. These include:
  • Fuel Reduction: Encouraging property owners to clear and manage vegetation around their homes.
  • FireSmart Building Practices: Ensuring future developments follow FireSmart guidelines, including fire-resistant materials and proper spacing from forested areas.
  • Community Engagement: Promoting public awareness through education and outreach programs.
  • FireSmart Committee: Forming a local committee to oversee the implementation and promotion of FireSmart practices in the township.
  • Emergency Planning: Preparing for potential evacuations and other emergency situations in the event of a wildfire.

Key Recommendations for Residents:

To help protect your property and the community from wildfire risk, we encourage you to follow these FireSmart guidelines:
  1. Clear Vegetation: Maintain a 30-meter defensible space around your home. This includes removing dead branches, leaves, and any flammable debris near your house.
  2. Use Fire-Resistant Materials: Consider using fire-resistant building materials, such as metal roofs and fire-resistant siding, for new buildings or renovations.
  3. Ladder Fuels: Trim branches within two meters of the ground and avoid having flammable vegetation close to structures.
  4. Storage Safety: Store firewood and other flammable materials at least 10 meters away from buildings.
  5. Install Sprinkler Systems: Consider installing an outdoor sprinkler system to keep vegetation damp during high-risk periods.
For more information on how to FireSmart your property, visit FireSmart Canada.

Legislation and Bylaws:

Prince Township has adopted several bylaws related to wildfire prevention, including:
  • Burning Restrictions: Permits are required for campfires and the burning of brush. Permits can be suspended during high-risk periods.
  • Fire Safety Bylaws: All new developments must comply with FireSmart standards, ensuring proper clearance and use of fire-resistant materials.
For full details, you can access the Forest Fires Prevention Act and other related provincial legislation via the Government of Ontario's website.

Helpful Resources
  • FireSmart Canada: A comprehensive resource for homeowners and communities to reduce wildfire risk. Access tools, guides, and training materials at FireSmart Canada.
  • Emergency Management Ontario: Information on how to prepare for evacuations and other emergency situations. Visit Emergency Management Ontario.
  • Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (OMNRF): Learn about wildfire management and prevention at OMNRF Wildfire Services.

Emergency Preparedness:
Wildfires can be unpredictable, and it's essential to be ready. Please familiarize yourself with evacuation plans and ensure that you have an emergency kit ready in case of a wildfire threat. You can view our hazard map here. For evacuation tips and emergency resources, refer to the Emergency Management Ontario website.
